Highlight: High Shoals Falls

High Shoals Falls is actually a succession of five waterfalls that grace this 170-acre scenic area. These falls have an estimated total vertical drop of 300 feet. The High Shoals Trail (1.2 miles) follows along High Shoals Creek to observation decks beside two of the five streams cascading in the High Shoals Scenic Area. Take GA 75 North from Helen for 1.4 miles. Turn right on Forest Service Road 283 at the High Shoals sign. Go 1.5 miles on this road.

Hike down steep trail to High Shoals Creek and then downstream for a total of about a mile and follow the trail through rhododendron and deep woods, and walk bridges over small rushing creeks. The first observation platform is Blue Hole Falls. The trail continues on to High Shoals Creek Falls and as you approach the falls the incline becomes steeper. The State Park Service has installed wooden steps which make the climb easier and also protects the natural environment. From the second observation platform, High Shoals Creek Falls can be seen shooting out of the laurel and hemlocks as a 50’ long cascade dropping 40 feet down the rock face.
